Teeth whitening is our most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure. It seems that almost everyone wants whiter teeth. So here at Pure Dental, we want to make that as easy as possible for you, and we offer two different methods for bleaching your teeth.
Most people elect to do the take-home whitening. It's relatively inexpensive, and you can do it at home, on your own time.
How Teeth Whitening Works
The whitening gel is a peroxide. When you wear the take-home trays that we make for you, the gel that you put in the trays penetrates into the enamel and dentin of your teeth and releases tiny bubbles of oxygen. The oxygen will oxidize the stains, thus bleaching them away. Not only will you remove the accumulated stains from all the dark, pigmented berries you have eaten, as well as from coffee, cola beverages, smoking, wine, etc., but if you bleach for long enough, your teeth will even be whiter than when you were a child.
The Teeth Whitening Procedure
We like to start with an exam and cleaning. The bleaching is much more effective if done on clean teeth. Then, we just need to take impressions of your teeth, and from the impressions we make a set of clear plastic trays that fit over your teeth. Then you just wear those trays for maybe half an hour to a couple of hours a day, or wear them overnight. Continue wearing it until your teeth are as white as you want them. If you run out of gel, let us know. In two to four weeks, your teeth will be sparkling white.
It is important to remember that while your teeth will be permanently whiter from the inside out, you need to be careful about the stains you allow onto your teeth after that. Just because a shirt is white, doesn't mean it will stay that way if you spill something on it. Keep your trays when you're done with them, and then every year or two, you can get a new tube of bleaching gel and do a touch-up treatment.
